Ordering pizza during a pandemic
Dave and I had our 20th wedding anniversary yesterday.
We decided since most of the restaurants are closed that we'd get take out from a place called Cloud Red and go eat it in the park while drinking a bottle of wine we'd bought 15 years ago that was from the year we got married.
Sunday afternoon - Dave and I place an advance order for our food from Cloud Red to be ready Wednesday at 6:30. The kids ask if they can have pizza since we're going out. We decide they can.
Tuesday, 11:00 - 11:30 - I work with the kids for a half hour to decide the perfect pizza special to order and what everyone is going to get on their half of the pizza and order it to be delivered Wednesday at 6:15.
Tuesday, 11:30 - I get not one, but two confirmations of my pizza order from Papa Johns. We start to move on with our day.
Tuesday, 12:15 - I get a call from Papa Johns' Headquarters saying that my Papa Johns order can't be completed because the store is closed.
Tuesday, 1:00 - 1:25 - I go on the Pizza Studio and put in curb side pick up for Wednesday at 5:45, so that I can get the pizzas before Dave and I leave. We go through what everyone wants on their individual pizzas, but then I have to redo all four orders because Anna wanted cherry tomatoes not roma tomatoes and that required me to completely revamp the order. I confirm the pick up is curbside, Wednesday at 5:45. But, once I hit order, it switches to "Ready ASAP."
Tuesday, 1:25-1:35 - I call Pizza Studio to try to tell them not to make the pizza and to change it to the next day. It goes straight to voicemail. So, I try again, and again, and again. After five minutes, I leave a message. But, I don't want them to make the pizza, so I try for five more minutes. Finally I quit.
Tuesday, 1:45 - The owner of Pizza Studio calls me to let me know they got the message before he made the pizzas and the pizzas will be ready the next day.
Wednesday, 5:40 - I'm all ready for to go out, so I drive to Pizza Studio to get our pizzas. When I arrive, they only have three instead of four. There was some confusion. So they double check which ones were made and then they make the fourth one. An employee also tells me that they also ended up making the pizzas yesterday, even though I called, because the owner didn't mark the slip as for the next day
Wednesday, 6:00 - I make it home and give the kids their pizzas. Dave and I start to head out. But, we learn the fourth pizza was not the fourth pizza, but a duplicate of one of the other three. Anna didn't get her pizza and the duplicate (Luke's) has basically the exact opposite of what Anna likes. Anna gets no meat, olives, peppers, and tomatoes; Luke gets no veggies, chicken, bacon, barbecue sauce, and pesto.
Wednesday, 6:05 - I call Pizza Studio to tell them about their mistake and rush over there. They can't find what was supposed to be on the pizza, so I have to tell them after I arrive. I learned that because of the pandemic they don't actually have the cherry tomatoes Anna wanted that made me have to redo the entire order the day before. I wait while they make the pizza, mentally planning if I can get home, drop off the pizza, and leave immediately, our Cloud Red food might still be hot.
Wednesday, 6:15 - I drive home as quickly as I can. (Thankfully, we live close.) When I get home, I can't pull in the driveway because there's a car in our driveway. I park in the street and run up. I want to drop off the pizza and leave immediately. We're running over ten minutes late.
Guy in the car parked in the driveway: I couldn't get out because your dogs are barking.
Me: I'm sorry. (I yell for the kids to get the dogs in.)
Guy in the car parked in the driveway: I'm here with your pizza.
Me: (Completely confused for a moment.) Wait, from Papa Johns!?! Seriously! I got a call that said that we couldn't get the order because the store is closed.
Guy in the car parked in the driveway: No we're open. I couldn't get out because your dogs.
Me: Yes, I know. I'm sorry. But, we got a call that our order had to be canceled, so we just got back from getting pizza from Pizza Studio.
Guy in the car parked in the driveway: No, we're open. I'd have brought it up, but your dogs... You did order this. I can show you. I have it right here.
Me: I know. You're right. I ordered it. But, then I got the call that it couldn't come, so we got pizza from somewhere else.
Guy in the car parked in the driveway: Do you want the pizza?
Ally: (corners of her mouth still covered in pizza sauce) I'm full!

Twin zings #2
Once again, although this picture may look sweet, it is deceiving.
This boy is not as sweet as he looks.
When we arrived at the cottage last weekend, we realized we didn't have as many options for breakfast as there usually were. I'd packed fruit, yogurt, and eggs, so I said there were plenty.
Then Dave went to the gas station for gas and when he came back, he held up some Frosted Flakes. Sugary cereal is something we've never had in the house.
He held the box up and the kids were tentatively excited, but looked at me for a reaction.
In that pause, Luke piped up with an imitation of me and said in a high pitched, self-righteous voice, "Dave... can I talk to you in the other room?"
Twin zings #1
Don't let this sweet picture fool you. She's a stinker.
We went on a bike ride and Ally got super grumpy.
She was screaming and refusing to continue.
She yelled at Dave that she hated him.
The next day, Dave went to talk to her upstairs.
He said, "Ally, why do you have to get so angry?
Why do you yell things like you hate me."
She looked at him matter-of-factly and replied,
"Because, I get tired.
And when I get tired, I get grumpy...
like your WIFE!"

This girl
This girl turned 14 1/2 last Monday. Instead of the usual half birthday cake for a half birthday, she got a whole, because last year (admidst attempting to pack for our 10-day cross-country National Park trip) I missed her half birthday, so I owed her a half from last year! The cake is supposed to look like the album cover of her favorite singer, Taylor Swift.
On Thursday, this girl graduated from middle school. Instead of the traditional ceremony, we did a car ceremony where the graduates rode in their car and all the middle school teachers waved at them and wished them well.
After the ceremony, Kate was opening the things she'd received, and along with scoring the highest score on the National Spanish Exam, we learned she'd won the Sterling Student award. This is an award given to two eighth grade students who have shown exceptional academics and character in the four years in middle school!
That's a big deal!!!
I'm proud of all her accomplishments, of course, but overall, this kid is just a really great person. She is generous, thoughtful, kind, and hard working. I couldn't ask for a better kid.
| We got her an Apple Watch. She totally earned it. |
